Karie Hendon

I recently had the privilege of itnerviewing a very sweet author, Karie Hendon, who wrote one of my new favorite vampire books – Heart & Sol. She is about as real as they come which to me says alot when you are writing for others. I definitely look forward to seeing more of her work in the future and hopefully she will share with us as new books in our genre are released. Thank you for taking the time to do the interview with us Karie.

Since you are a new author what is two things that you want your readers to know about you?
Two things… I love my characters. I place myself in the mind of each of them as I write so I can portray them with a more relatable quality. I want my fans to be able to see aspects of themselves when they read my books. I’m just a female with a very active imagination that loves to share my thoughts in the form of a story. My books are a diary from my inner me. I use some qualities of myself as well as the people around me to inspire the attributes of my characters.

Give us a short description of what people will find when they read Heart and Sol?
Not giving too much away, but I based Heart and Sol around a plus sized woman with insecurities that has to come to terms with herself not just in her looks but also in finding out who she is. I put an unexpected twist on the vampire that I’m excited for everyone to read about.

How did you come up with the title of your book?
Heart and Sol, was put together simply. Heart is just showing the intimacy and romance that fill the pages, and Sol is my brand of Vampire.

How long did it take you to write your first book?
It took me about 6 months to write my first book. I was surprised how well it just flowed. Both Heart and Sol and my first book came so easy, I figured it was like, beginners luck.

What one thing makes your books stand out from all the others that are in this same genre?
he biggest thing that stands out, is that my main character is a plus size woman. I wanted to add some real world to my story. Showing that even in the supernatural world, there are still normal everyday insecurities.

How old was you when you knew that you wanted to become a professional writer?
Sixteen is when it hit me. I had always enjoyed writing, but after having some of my writing published in my high school newspaper it encouraged me. So I actually started writing

Can you tell us about future works that may already be in the process?
Right now, I am currently working on the sequel to Heart and Sol, as well as the sequel to my first book Keeper of my Heart.

Have you always been a fan of vampires?
Yes, I have been a fan for years. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was my favorite show when I was a teenager, and that’s when it all started. I mean who doesn’t want to have a hot, brooding, swoon worthy vamp.

Who is your favorite author and how have they inspired you as the writer that you are today?
It’s a toss up between J.R. Ward and Jeanine Frost. Even though they are very successful, it’s inspiring to know that are confident enough to take risks to change the normal expectations of the vampire world. Writing is such a delicate but creative process, so you want to make sure you’re able to bring your story to life. So for me, following these to women, learning their methods and what they had to endure in the beginning, has given me the confidence to push the boundaries of writing in this genre.
