Author Interview – Helen Treharne

indexHere is my author interview with Helen Treharne. We will be highlighting The Sophie Morgan Vampire Series by this aweome author. Make sure to check out the books available in the series including Relative Strangers and Death in the Family.

What was your overall inspiration to write in the very beginning of your career?
I wanted to write a series which I could relate to. I enjoyed Twilight and the Sookie Stackhouse books, but I wanted something that was more true to life. I wanted to answer the question “ what would really happen if I discovered vampires existed?” I didn’t want to write a romance or a hero with superhuman powers, I wanted to combine my favorite elements in one work – female protagonist, complex family issues, geekiness, sinister vampires and a bit of sexual ambiguity! I also wanted something that was distinctly British. There are very few British based vampire works these days!

How many vampire books do you currently have out with titles please?
The Sophie Morgan Vampire Series has two books currently on release – the first is Relative Strangers, and the second is Death in the Family. A third book, Hostile Relations, will be out late summer.

Do you have a favorite vampire book or movie/tv show?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A couple of reviewers have likened the series to the show which is deeply flattering – although it’s set around two years after our heroine, Sophie Morgan, graduates.  I am also a huge fan of Being Human, the UK version that is, and there is more than one nod to the show in the series. I love the dark humor and irreverent tone. The vampires are vicious too.

If vampires were to really exist and you had the option to become immortal would you do so yes or no and why?
I think it would be pretty cool to see what unfolds through history, but I think the finite nature of life makes it sort of exciting! It would be awful to see all the people you love die and the things you enjoy fade.

What do you find to be the most challenging thing about being an author?
Having too many ideas and trying to focus on one at a time.

If you could co-write a brand new vampire book with anyone of you’re choosing who would it be and why?
Mark Gatiss. Not only is he an amazing actor, director and writer, he is a massive fan and font of knowledge when it comes to horror. He’d be a scream to work with. He would also be a perfect actor to portray my vampire Charles Ferrers. Perhaps I could even persuade him to adapt the series for TV, direct and star in it.

Are you currently working on any new projects that you would like to share with us?
I’m working on the third book in the series, Hostile Relations, with my editor. I’m also working on a police thriller.

What is one of the biggest misconceptions that you think people have about authors in general?
That it’s easy. Most people have no idea how much effort and time it takes to write a book, but it’s really hard work.

If money was no object and you could travel to any place in the world for your dream vacation where would you go and what would you do?
Gosh, I’m lucky to have already done quite a bit of travel. I’d love to go to the Seychelles or somewhere else with a white sandy beach to just chill out and read, but I’m eager to visit Australia, and probably take a long overdue return trip to one of my favorite places – Las Vegas!

Do you prefer online events or live events and what do you think the pros and cons of each are?
Live events are great for really getting to know your readers but they have limited exposure. Online events are easier in many respect and enables you to reach out to people across the world. The downside of online events is that there are so many you don’t always get to reach your target audience and you can get lost in a sea of other online events. Time differences also mean for UK authors you are getting up at 2am to participate.
