The Girl & The Vampire Author Interview Kira Barker

I recently came across a new author – Kira Barker (well new to me and noticed that she had a short novella named The Girl & The Vampire so of course I wanted to meet her!) I decided I would love to learn more about her while showing her off to the fans of the page so please take a moment to read the interview that I did with her and stop by and check out her website and the book!

What is your favorite type of book to read?
Urban fantasy and post-apocalyptic horror (Zombies anyone?) – but as long as the characters are captivating and the story is strong, I will real pretty much anything.

What inspired your short Novella The Girl & The Vampire?
I love the darker, erotic side of vampires, and I feel like over the past couple of years that has been less well represented, so I wanted to write something that echoed that. The entire novella series was motivated by that, using the different supernatural tropes in what I felt like was the most fascinating way.

Can we expect to see any other paranormal books from you in the near future?
I have a four-book series starring a druid planned (including vamps, werewolves, witches, demons and a few other creepy-crawlies), so likely yes!

How many books do you currently have on the shelf with titles?
I have two books and five novellas.

Caught in the Middle is a BDSM/menage erotic romance. Hunter & Prey erotic thriller/horror. And the Embassy series of novellas, including The Girl & The Vampire.

Do you have a favorite vampire book?
Probably Jeaniene Frost’s Halfway to the Grave.

Do you watch vampire movies or TV shows and if so what is your favorite?
I love watching Supernatural and Buffy. Not sure what my favorite vampire movie would be Interview With The Vampire.

Will there be any future works based on or around the short Novella The Girl & The Vampire?
There might be, I haven’t decided yet. I didn’t plan to expand it but I had a lot of fun writing Celia and Rachel (the main character from the 2nd novella in the series), and a few readers have been asking about more. I’m always happy to oblige such requests!

Are you self published or with a traditional author and what do you find to be the pros and cons of each?
Self-published, and very proud of it! I love being in control of all the steps, and having the freedom to get the version of the story out that I want the audience to read. But it would be nice to not have to promote my work. I hope that in the upcoming years it will be easier to hire professionals for that, just like editors and cover artists now. Then again, I feel like I’m a lot closer to my audience without a publisher and agent running interference, wouldn’t want to change that.

What would you like new fans to know about you as an author?
I like to write a lot of different things, but I always try to create strong female characters. If that’s your thing, I’m your girl!

What advice would you give to other new authors just getting started?
Write, and don’t let anyone discourage you. Just because someone doesn’t agree with what you do (the genre you write in, plot decisions, how fast or slow you churn out books) doesn’t make them right.
